Igbobi College, Lagos, has been named Nigeria’s best premier high school after winning the maiden edition of the Champ High School Quiz competition. The school secured the title by defeating CMS Grammar School, Lagos, in the grand finale held on August 10 at Ten0one Studios, Ikeja, taking home a cash prize of N1 million.
The competition, which began in July, brought together 32 premier secondary schools across the country. It opened with an online test in English, Mathematics, and History, which reduced the field to eight schools. Those who advanced included CMS Grammar School, Lagos; Queen’s School, Ibadan; St. Gregory’s College, Lagos; Oriwu Model College, Ikorodu; Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo; Baptist Academy, Lagos; Wesley College, Ibadan; and Igbobi College, Lagos. The televised stage of the competition eventually produced Igbobi College as champion.
The quiz was initiated by four alumni of pre-independence high schools who sought to promote STEM education and strengthen the legacy of heritage schools. Among them were Deputy Managing Director of First Bank, Gbenga Shobo; founder and executive vice-chair of Emerging Africa Group, Oluwatoyin Sanni; founder of Orangeline Limited, Chike Iroegbunam; and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), Jude Chiemeka.
During the award presentation, Ore Sofekun, consultant at theSTEMAfrica Initiatives, commended Igbobi College for its role in education and called on alumni and parents to continue supporting heritage schools. She stressed the importance of sustaining these institutions for future generations, urging students to remain committed to STEM despite challenges.
The principal of Igbobi College, Adedotun Akanbi, praised the winning team of Olabode Obaloluwa, Okoronkwo David, and Lukeahizu Praise, describing them as proof that the school is not only a place of discipline but also a hub of academic excellence.
Abimbola Babalola, head of trading and products at NGX, who represented Jude Chiemeka, congratulated the students and encouraged them to see themselves as future leaders with the responsibility of solving problems in society.
Other attendees included Igbobi College PTA chairman, Abiodun Makinde; external relations team lead at Bank of Industry, Aishat Maibe-Borodo; founder of STEM Africa Initiatives, Oladapo Ojo; and principal officers of the school.
