James Gunn Says New Superman Film Will Explore Politics, Morality, and Humanity

Director James Gunn reveals the 2025 Superman reboot will focus on politics, morality, and the value of human kindness, calling the hero “a story of America.”

Director James Gunn has shared fresh details about the upcoming Superman reboot, describing it as a political and emotional journey that reflects core American values. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Gunn said the story is about “an immigrant that came from other places” and called Superman “the story of America.” He emphasized that while the character is known for his powers, this new version will highlight basic human kindness, a quality Gunn believes society has lost.

The film, set for release on July 11, 2025, is a reboot of the 2013 Man of Steel and will kick off a new cinematic universe for the DC franchise. David Corenswet takes on the role of Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Superman, originally created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in Cleveland, Ohio, is portrayed in the comics as the last survivor of Krypton, sent to Earth by his parents before their planet’s destruction. Gunn’s film stays true to this origin but adds layers of political commentary and moral exploration.

When asked how audiences across the U.S. might interpret the film’s political elements — from urban centers like New York (inspired by Metropolis) to rural areas like Superman’s fictional home in Kansas — Gunn acknowledged that reactions would vary. He said the central message is about kindness, even though some might find offense in that. “But screw them,” he added bluntly.

Gunn also shared that the film won’t be all serious. It will include lighter, fun elements — such as a flying dog in a cape — blending fantasy with real-world ideas. He described a central conflict between Superman and Lois Lane that reflects different moral viewpoints: Superman’s belief in never killing versus Lois’s view that moral choices require balance.

Gunn’s comments have stirred discussion about the film’s themes, though he has yet to respond to further media inquiries.
