Kano Government Supports Families of Fallen Athletes with ₦1 Million Each

Kano State donates ₦1m to each family of 21 athletes and officials who died in a fatal crash after the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta.

The Kano State government has donated ₦1 million to each family of the 21 athletes and officials who lost their lives in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

A delegation led by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo visited Nasarawa Hospital, where many of the victims’ bodies were kept. Gwarzo, speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the accident as a great loss to both Kano State and the country. He said the victims had represented the state with commitment and excellence, adding that some were returning home with medals—a sign of their effort and national pride.

The deceased included Ibrahim Galadima, spokesperson of the Kano State Sports Commission, team photographer Bilal Ahmad Salisu, as well as drivers, medical staff, and members of the kickboxing and wrestling teams, including coaches and secretaries.

To support the affected families further, the state government announced plans to provide food and essential items. Governor Yusuf also directed that all injured survivors receive full medical care at the state’s expense.
