Katsina State Government has formally requested the cancellation of the English Language Paper 2 conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Wednesday, May 28. The demand was made on Saturday, May 31, by the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Zainab Musa-Musawa, during her visit to the WAEC office in Katsina.
She delivered a petition expressing the government’s position, which Ummukhair Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Education, signed.
The exam, initially scheduled for 12 noon, was delayed for several hours. Candidates across the country eventually wrote the paper late at night. Many students were forced to stay at their exam centres until midnight, relying on candles and mobile phone lights due to poor visibility.
WAEC later issued an apology, explaining that the delay was a precaution to prevent malpractice and the leaking of exam papers. They appealed for understanding from students, parents, and other stakeholders.
Katsina State is now urging WAEC to cancel the paper, citing the difficult conditions under which it was conducted and its potential impact on the fairness of the results.
