Kebbi Governor Ends Hand-Picking of Council Leaders, Commits to Grassroots Progress

Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris confirms end to hand-picked council leaders, pledging grassroots development through inclusive governance.

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has announced a permanent end to the practice of selecting Local Government Chairmen and Councillors without public input. Speaking to journalists in Birnin Kebbi after a closed-door meeting with the 21 Local Government Chairmen, their deputies, and 225 Councillors, he emphasized that every current council leader was chosen by their community, not imposed by any authority.

Governor Idris praised their dedication and described their support for his administration as unwavering. He said their leadership at both the council and ward levels had contributed meaningfully to local development and governance.

The meeting, held at the Government House, aimed to exchange ideas and better understand the challenges facing communities. Idris explained that the discussion would help shape decisions and policies to meet grassroots needs more effectively. He noted that such engagements would continue as part of efforts to improve the quality of life for residents across the state.

The Governor stated that his administration remains focused on consulting key stakeholders to ensure that development efforts are inclusive and aligned with community realities. He also highlighted that the Chairmen and Councillors had expressed their confidence in his leadership and appreciated the improvements being made under his watch.

The State ALGON Chairman and Birnin Kebbi Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Dahiru Nayaya Ambursa, led the delegation. Speaking after the session, he described the gathering as a strategic move to accelerate rural development. He applauded Governor Idris for his inclusive leadership and commitment to public welfare.

Nayaya called the Governor one of the most compassionate leaders in Kebbi’s history, saying his leadership had significantly improved living standards across the state. He reaffirmed the full support of local government leaders for the current administration.

Also present at the meeting were the Kebbi APC Chairman, Abubakar Kana Zuru; Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala Tafida; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar Dutsinmari; and the State Accountant-General, Muhammad Bello Ibrahim Nahaliku.
