The Lagos State Government has launched a full investigation into the demolition of a property said to belong to the brother of Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Mr. Obi had earlier accused the state of being involved in the demolition, prompting the government to respond swiftly. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, released a statement denying any involvement by the state or its agencies. He said the accusation was not backed by facts and called it misleading.
Omotoso clarified that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) did not carry out the demolition. This position was also confirmed by Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, who oversees the agency.
Expressing concern over the timing and nature of the claim, Omotoso warned against spreading false information, especially so close to the local government elections. He added that the government remains committed to due process and the rule of law.
To uncover the truth, the state directed the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahun Owodunni Oki will lead a detailed investigation. LASBCA will conduct the inquiry to determine who was behind the demolition and ensure that the right actions are taken.
The Lagos Government assured residents of its commitment to fairness, safety, and law enforcement, adding that Lagos remains open to all Nigerians.
