The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to tighten control over the rising number of unlicensed skincare and aesthetic medicine operators. This was made known by the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, during the 19th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD).
Professor Abayomi raised concerns about the growing presence of unqualified individuals offering skincare treatments under the guise of aesthetic dermatology. According to him, this global trend has made its way into Lagos, putting residents at risk of harmful procedures by self-proclaimed experts with no proper training.
He emphasized that the state’s Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency is already investigating the situation. The goal, he said, is to partner with certified dermatologists under NAD to define clear boundaries and bring unregulated practitioners under strict government oversight.
The commissioner assured the public that measures will be taken to ensure only trained and approved professionals are allowed to operate within the skincare and aesthetic space in Lagos.
