The Lagos State Government urges residents to report landlords or agents who demand more than one year’s rent. The call comes as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to address excesses in the real estate sector. Barakat Bakare, the Special Adviser on Housing to the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA), appealed Thursday during an appearance on the TVC programme Your View. She emphasized the government’s commitment to regulating the housing market and ensuring that housing is more accessible.
Bakare explained that the Sanwo-Olu administration is reviewing the state’s tenancy law to close gaps, particularly concerning caution fees, which have been a frequent source of conflict between landlords and tenants. She encouraged residents to report landlords who violate the law by demanding more than one year’s rent. The regulation allows landlords to charge quarterly or annual rent, but anything beyond this is illegal. Complaints can be made by visiting the LASRERA office in Alausa or using their online portal.
She further noted that the state is discussing with landlords, developers, and property associations to promote fair pricing and responsible housing practices. Bakare also reminded prospective tenants to verify the registration of any real estate agent or developer with LASRERA before entering into agreements.
The government stressed that the aim is to make housing more affordable and humane for Lagosians during these difficult times. Bakare emphasized finding a fair middle ground and ensuring transparency and equity in property transactions.
