Lagos Workers Seek Minimum Wage Expansion as Sanwo-Olu Reaffirms Support

Lagos NLC urges Governor Sanwo-Olu to extend the N85,000 minimum wage to all state agencies, as workers push for better welfare on International Workers' Day.

During the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, the Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to extend the newly introduced N85,000 minimum wage to employees in all state agencies and parastatals. The appeal aimed to ease workers’ financial struggles and address their growing economic hardships.

The event, themed “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” was marked by a show of solidarity. Workers from various unions participated in a traditional match past despite light rainfall. Many wore customised T-shirts, caps, and colourful Ankara outfits, showcasing their unity and resilience.

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the concerns raised by labour leaders, affirming his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of public servants. He assured workers that his government would continue to strengthen the state workforce and improve employee conditions. Additionally, he announced that next year’s May Day celebration would be held at the newly rehabilitated National Stadium in Surulere, further reflecting his administration’s dedication to the state’s development.

Commissioner for Establishments and Training Afolabi Ayantayo and Head of Service Olabode Agoro both expressed appreciation for the contributions of Lagos workers and highlighted several state government initiatives designed to improve employee welfare and enhance working conditions.

While acknowledging the government’s support, Lagos NLC Chairperson, Comrade Funmilayo Sessi, urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to include workers in state agencies and parastatals in the minimum wage policy to relieve their financial pressures. Meanwhile, Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Gbenga Ekundayo, called for the federal government to grant Lagos special status and increased financial allocations, citing the state’s large population and extensive infrastructure needs. He also encouraged residents to fulfill their civic duties by regularly paying taxes to support the state’s progress.
