Rodney O, a music artist known for his track Everlasting Bass, has filed a lawsuit against rap stars Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar. The lawsuit stems from the use of a sample from his 1980s hit in the diss track Like That, which was released as part of a collaboration involving Drake. Rodney O claims that he never received the promised royalties and that the sample was improperly cleared. Additionally, he alleges that he was left out of the songwriting credits when the track was submitted for the Grammys.
The lawsuit also targets the estate of the late Barry White, whose work was sampled in a Like That remix produced by Kanye West. Rodney O claims that he was never provided with the song’s final version, which featured Kendrick Lamar’s high-profile verse, causing him to be unaware of Lamar’s contribution until the track’s release. He also recounts a conversation with a friend, who informed him that Kendrick Lamar was on the record just a day before it hit the public.
However, A Metro Boomin representative disputes these claims, stating that the proper rights were secured for the sample and that Rodney O had been paid $50,000 for his portion. The representative also suggested that unresolved issues may be tied to the Barry White estate, which has yet to respond to the allegations.
Despite not knowing about Lamar’s involvement, Rodney O had previously expressed his amazement at hearing his sampled track featured in such a popular song. He described the experience as surreal and confirmed that hearing the world’s reaction to the song made him realize the track’s immense success.
