A tragic accident occurred in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, on Tuesday, July 1, when a man was hit and killed by a train while crossing the railway tracks near the city’s central station. According to officials, the victim was wearing noise-cancelling headphones, which may have prevented him from hearing the train as it approached.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) confirmed the incident happened around 12:55 PM. Emergency services were called to the scene and are currently working to identify the man and contact his family. This incident is the third railway-related death reported in the country within just two days.
Earlier on Monday, two similar fatal accidents occurred in Mutare and Zvishavane. The NRZ expressed deep regret over the recurring tragedies and issued a renewed warning to the public about the dangers of crossing railway lines without proper caution.
They urged pedestrians to avoid distractions, such as headphones or mobile phones, when near railway tracks and to use only designated crossing points. They also reminded the public that trains take a long time to stop once in motion, making it vital to stay alert.
Authorities have launched investigations into all three incidents and are seeking assistance from anyone with relevant information. Meanwhile, the NRZ extended its condolences to the victim’s family and reminded citizens to exercise extreme care when approaching railway areas at all times.
