Military Rescues 65 Kidnapped Victims, Arrests 80 Suspects, Shuts Down 27 Illegal Refineries

Troops rescue 65 hostages, arrest 80 suspects, and shut 27 illegal refineries in nationwide May 2025 crackdown, says Defence Headquarters.

In May 2025, joint military forces across Nigeria carried out a series of coordinated operations that led to the rescue of 65 kidnapped victims and the arrest of more than 80 suspects involved in terrorism, kidnapping, oil theft, and other crimes. The Defence Headquarters reported that the nationwide campaign targeted urban and remote areas, showing strong results across several zones.

In the North East, troops under Operation Hadin Kai conducted missions in Borno and Yobe States, rescuing 22 kidnapped individuals and arresting 16 suspected terrorist collaborators. Six terrorists were captured, others were killed in combat, and a large quantity of weapons, explosives, vehicles, and cash amounting to ₦38,900 was recovered. Another 12 victims escaped captivity and were secured by troops.

The North West operations, tagged Operation Fasin Yamma, were active in Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Katsina States. These missions led to the rescue of four kidnapped victims, neutralization of several armed criminals, and the arrest of three suspects, including a female accomplice and others in Niger and Sokoto States.

Under Operation Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke, troops covered Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Taraba States in the North Central zone. They rescued 11 victims, neutralized several extremists, and arrested over 20 suspects. Security forces also seized firearms, ammunition, motorcycles, livestock, and over ₦534,600 in cash. A search in Nasarawa uncovered military uniforms and additional weapons from a suspect’s home.

Operations in the South East, under the name Operation Udoka, resulted in the arrest of four suspects in Ebonyi and Anambra States. Security agents recovered firearms, ammunition, and a vehicle.

In the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe led to the deactivation of 27 illegal refinery sites. Troops recovered more than 77,000 litres of stolen crude oil, 10,340 litres of illegally refined diesel (AGO), 2,700 litres of kerosene (DPK), and 1,240 litres of petrol (PMS). Twenty-seven oil thieves were arrested, and over 96 items used in illegal refining—including boats, engines, tanks, and drilling machines—were seized. In Delta and Bayelsa States, 13 more individuals linked to vandalism and criminal activities were arrested. Items recovered included weapons, mobile phones, laptops, televisions, and vehicles.

Major General Markus Kangye praised the troops’ dedication, noting their ability to carry out direct and indirect strategies to protect lives, infrastructure, and communities. He highlighted efforts to reduce civilian harm while ensuring maximum security impact.

The Defence Headquarters concluded by applauding the bravery and professionalism of the forces and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the nation against all threats.
