The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of several athletes and officials from Kano State. The victims were returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State when the crash occurred on Saturday.
In a statement released by its National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Adeyemi Samson Ajasa, the student body described the incident as a national tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and the sports community. The President of NANS, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, also offered words of comfort and solidarity, describing the loss as a painful blow to youth development and national unity.
According to the statement, 20 young athletes who dedicated themselves to representing Kano and promoting sportsmanship across Nigeria were among those who lost their lives. NANS emphasized that the grief extends far beyond the state, affecting the entire nation, particularly the youth population.
The association also expressed sympathy to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Kano State Sports Council, and all citizens of Kano, highlighting that the accident has left an irreplaceable gap in the Nigerian sports scene.
Calling for accountability, NANS urged both federal and state governments to improve travel safety measures for athletes and citizens attending national events. It emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the crash and prevent similar incidents in the future.
As part of its commitment, NANS pledged support for the affected families and encouraged authorities to provide the necessary assistance and emotional support during this period of mourning. The statement concluded with prayers for the souls of the departed and a wish for strength for those left behind.
