NANS Threatens Mass Protest Over Prolonged Closure of Abuja Primary Schools

NANS gives Wike 7 days to reopen FCT public primary schools or face nationwide protests. Students slam neglect of children’s right to basic education.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, demanding the immediate reopening of public primary schools across Abuja. The schools have remained shut for over two months due to unresolved disputes between the FCT Administration and Local Government Education Authorities.

In a statement signed by NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the student body condemned the situation, describing it as a clear sign of government neglect. They said thousands of underprivileged children have been forced to stay out of school while the children of the wealthy continue their education in private institutions without interruption.

NANS explained that they had previously written to the Minister and requested a meeting to resolve the crisis, but received no response. The association said it had exercised patience through peaceful and constructive engagement, but Wike’s silence left them no choice but to consider stronger actions.

Comrade Oladoja warned that if the government fails to reopen the schools within the given timeframe, students and education rights activists nationwide will stage a massive protest. He threatened to shut down the Federal Capital Development Authority as a form of civil resistance.

He stressed that the right to education must not be treated as optional, and warned that further delay would be a betrayal of the nation’s future.
