Nasarawa Government Orders Residents in Flood Zones to Move to Safer Areas

Nasarawa warns flood-prone residents to move to safer areas immediately, boosting sanitation efforts to prevent flood damage and improve public health.

The Nasarawa State Government has warned residents living in flood-prone locations to relocate to higher ground immediately to avoid dangers during the rainy season. Margaret Elayo, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, gave the directive on May 31 in Lafia, following recent flood forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and past flood damage in the state.

Elayo highlighted that some states have already experienced flooding, stressing the need for vulnerable communities to act quickly. She said the government is working closely with local leaders to guide residents to safe relocation sites. Residents were advised to take their valuables and temporarily leave their homes to prevent loss of life in the event of flooding.

The commissioner also urged the public to stop dumping waste in drains or building on waterways, as these actions worsen flooding. Plans are underway to enhance public education on clearing water channels through partnerships with traditional and religious leaders, as well as media outlets. She promised to activate the recycling plant in Akurba, Lafia, to reduce improper waste disposal.

Elayo described the current state of littered streets as unacceptable and warned that offenders could face penalties. She expressed concern about low community involvement in the monthly sanitation exercise and called for increased cooperation to maintain cleanliness, prevent disease outbreaks, and promote healthier living.

In a related update, Abubakar Mohammed, Chief Prosecutor Officer of the ministry, reported that 168 people were arrested statewide for violating sanitation laws by conducting business during the sanitation period, which is prohibited under the State Environmental Sanitation Law.
