National Assembly Moves Towards Establishing State Police to Combat Insecurity

Senate leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, reveals plans for state police as part of a broader strategy to address Nigeria’s security challenges, urging unity and caution against divisive politics.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the leader of the Senate, has confirmed that the National Assembly is actively developing a legal framework to establish state police, an important step in tackling Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis. Bamidele shared this update during his Easter message on Sunday, calling for national unity and spiritual reflection, while condemning the role of divisive politics in deepening the country’s challenges.

The Senate leader emphasized that, alongside the efforts to establish state police, security agencies must work cohesively to identify and apprehend those responsible for terror attacks across the nation. His remarks suggest a shift toward decentralizing Nigeria’s policing system, a move long advocated by various groups in response to growing insecurity.

In his Easter message, Bamidele urged political leaders to emulate the unity and selflessness of Jesus Christ, stressing the importance of collaboration over competition in building a stronger nation. He condemned the recent violent incidents in Benue and Plateau States, labeling them as contradictory to the peace and love teachings of Christ. The senator also criticized politicians who exploit national challenges for political gain, warning that such actions harm the country’s efforts to unite.

Reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to Nigeria’s growth, Bamidele expressed confidence in the country’s future, stating that the ultimate goal remains a peaceful, prosperous federation that benefits all citizens.
