The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ebonyi State has seized a total of 91.768 kilograms of cannabis sativa and other psychotropic substances from January to June 2025. The state commander, Okechukwu Nkere, announced this during a press briefing in Abakaliki to mark the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Nkere said the agency also arrested 212 individuals involved in drug-related activities. Among those arrested were 169 men and 43 women. So far, seven of them have been convicted in court.
He noted that seven persons have completed treatment and rehabilitation, while 11 others are still undergoing the process. In addition, 104 individuals — 83 men and 21 women — have received brief counselling at the agency’s facility.
Public education has also been a major part of the agency’s effort. NDLEA teams have visited schools, religious centres, and communities across the state’s three senatorial zones to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
Nkere urged the public, especially young people, to stay away from drugs, warning that there is no benefit in their use. He appreciated the support received from the Ebonyi State Government and other partners in combating drug abuse and trafficking.
