Nigeria Faces Three Days of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall, NiMet Warns

NiMet alerts Nigerians to expect thunderstorms and rain from Monday through Wednesday, with flood risks in several states.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a weather forecast indicating that the country will experience widespread rainfall and thunderstorms spanning three days, beginning Monday and continuing through Wednesday.

In a weather outlook published Sunday in Abuja, the agency announced that thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected over sections of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina states during Monday morning hours. Rainfall is also anticipated in Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba later that day.

The agency highlighted the possibility of flash flooding in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano during this timeframe.

States in the central region, including Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Nasarawa, are expected to experience morning cloud cover followed by light to moderate rain. Plateau State faces an elevated flood risk during this period.

Southern areas will see light to moderate rainfall affecting Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunny intervals with scattered clouds across northern regions, while thunderstorms and rain will continue over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and surrounding areas. Both central and southern zones are expected to receive moderate rainfall throughout the day.

Wednesday will bring sunshine mixed with thunderstorms to northern states in the morning hours, while the central region will see overcast conditions with moderate rain. Southern states, particularly Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, should prepare for morning showers that may intensify into moderate to heavy rainfall as the day progresses.

The meteorological agency has advised people living in flood-susceptible locations to activate emergency response measures. Residents are urged to refrain from driving during periods of intense rainfall, secure outdoor items that could be displaced by wind, and take protective measures against strong gusts and cooler nighttime temperatures.

Additional safety recommendations include unplugging electrical devices during thunderstorms and avoiding shelter beneath tall trees. Airline operators have been advised to request airport-specific weather briefings to ensure safe flight operations.
