Nigeria Mourns as Buhari and Awujale Pass On, Leaders Hail Their Legacies

Senate Leader, Oyebanji, and Fayemi mourn Buhari and Awujale, praising their enduring impact on Nigeria’s unity, culture, and leadership values.

Nigeria is in mourning following the deaths of former President Muhammadu Buhari and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, and former Governor Kayode Fayemi described their passing as a painful double tragedy for the nation.

In a statement from his media office, Senator Bamidele praised both men as icons of peace and unity whose leadership strengthened Nigeria’s democratic and cultural foundations. He said their deaths on Sunday, July 13, 2025, marked the end of significant chapters in Nigeria’s history.

Bamidele remembered Buhari as a disciplined and principled leader who fought tirelessly against corruption. From his time as Military Head of State to his emergence as a democratically elected President in 2015, Buhari’s life was defined by service and integrity. The Senate Leader recalled Buhari’s political rise, starting from the ANPP to his pivotal role in founding the APC, which led to the progressive takeover of power.

He extended heartfelt condolences to Aisha Buhari, the former president’s family, the Daura Emirate, the people of Katsina State, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the current administration to remain steadfast in advancing Buhari’s legacy of reform.

Turning to the late Awujale, Bamidele highlighted his remarkable 65-year reign, during which he led with wisdom, fairness, and strength. He described Oba Adetona as a father to all, regardless of background, and a royal figure who defended the dignity of the throne across military and democratic regimes. He hailed the monarch’s contributions to peace, culture, and development across Ogun State and the nation.

On behalf of the Nigerian Senate and the South-West Caucus, Bamidele offered sympathies to the Anikilaya Ruling House, the people of Ijebu Kingdom, and the Ogun State Government.

Governor Oyebanji and Dr. Fayemi also expressed sorrow over the losses. Fayemi described Buhari as a determined leader who overcame numerous electoral defeats before claiming democratic victory. He lauded Buhari’s perseverance and deep belief in national transformation.

Governor Oyebanji honored Oba Adetona as a royal figure whose life was devoted to cultural preservation, growth, and selfless leadership. He said the Awujale’s legacy would remain etched in history.

Both leaders urged Nigerians to remember the departed by living out the values they represented—discipline, unity, peace, and national service.
