Nigeria has pledged to strengthen its long-standing relationship with Ghana, focusing on government-level cooperation and improved people-to-people ties. This assurance came from the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during her official visit to Ghana aimed at addressing concerns affecting Nigerian citizens residing there.
Her visit follows growing tension between nationals of both countries. According to a statement released by her Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Dr. Magnus Eze, the minister’s engagements are designed to protect the rights, businesses, and wellbeing of Nigerians living in Ghana.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who arrived in Accra on Tuesday evening via Kotoka International Airport, began her diplomatic meetings immediately, starting with a visit to Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police, Christian Yohuno. On Wednesday, she held further talks with top Ghanaian officials, traditional leaders, and members of the Nigerian community.
She is also scheduled to meet with Ghana’s President and Foreign Minister before concluding her visit. Her return to Abuja is expected on Thursday. The Nigerian government says these efforts are part of a broader commitment to ensuring peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between the two West African nations.
