Nigeria’s Government Seals Deals with 10 Firms to Expand Gas Supply

Nigeria signs deals with 10 companies to build gas plants and infrastructure, boosting energy supply and supporting cheaper transportation in universities.

The Federal Government finalized agreements with ten companies on Thursday to build gas processing plants and boost gas infrastructure across the country. These contracts were signed in Abuja between the Midstream and Downstream Infrastructure Fund (MDIF) and the gas project promoters. The deals include Joint Venture and Operating Agreements, Equity Agreements, and Accounts Agreements.

Among the companies involved are Ant Energy Limited, Sub Sea 9 Gas, Waterdance International Concepts, and LNG Arete. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, explained that these agreements aim to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s gas sector. He emphasized that the partnerships align national priorities with practical steps to grow the economy, improve energy security, and create lasting benefits for future generations.

Ekpo highlighted that in the first year of the current administration, the MDIF supported six companies working on midstream and downstream gas projects, encouraging innovation and efficiency in gas processing and distribution. He added that the fund will enable integrated gas infrastructure, closing gaps that have long held back progress. The effects will ripple across various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and digital technology.

MDIF’s Executive Director, Oluwole Adama, detailed the projects under these agreements: six gas processing plants to increase domestic gas supply in liquefied and other forms; three compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling stations to expand gas use for transport and industry; and one bulk liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facility to ease supply chain challenges.

Separately, the government launched the CNG Sprout project to install CNG conversion and refueling stations at 20 universities nationwide. This initiative aims to offer cheaper transportation options for students and staff, featuring CNG-powered buses and tricycles. Funded by MDIF, the project supports Nigeria’s Decade of Gas vision by providing critical infrastructure and funding for projects that directly benefit citizens.
