Nigeria’s Internet Reach Hits 48.15% Despite Falling Short of 2025 Goal

Nigeria's internet penetration rises to 48.15% in April 2025, showing growth but still lagging behind the 70% broadband goal set for the year.

Nigeria’s internet access has continued to improve, reaching 48.15% in April 2025. This is based on official data published by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which tracks progress in the telecoms industry. The new figure shows a slight rise from the 47.73% recorded in March. It’s the highest level since September 2024, when penetration dropped to 41.56%. Since then, the country has recorded consistent monthly increases: October saw 42.24%, November climbed to 43.16%, December reached 44.43%, followed by 45.61% in January 2025, and 46.58% in February.

Despite this growth, the country is still behind on its target of reaching 70% broadband coverage by the end of 2025, as set out in the National Broadband Plan 2020–2025. While internet access has improved, actual data consumption has taken a step back. In April, Nigerians used 983,283.43 terabytes of data, lower than the 995,876.10 terabytes used in March. Earlier in the year, data usage dropped from over one million terabytes in January to 893,054.80 terabytes in February, when the country also lost close to one million internet users.

The NCC noted that telecom providers must share regular updates as part of their license agreement. These updates help the Commission monitor key industry trends such as service quality, pricing, competition, and subscriber changes across the sector.
