Nollywood actor and producer Emelu Simon Chibuzor has opened up about his abduction in 2021, describing an ordeal that continues to affect him emotionally and professionally.
Chibuzor was kidnapped on June 19, 2021, while working on the film “Forbidden Throne” in Imo State. The incident occurred as he went to purchase food for the late actor Junior Pope.
The actor recalled how quickly the situation unfolded. A vehicle intercepted him, with armed occupants wielding AK-47 rifles. Initially confused by the scene, which seemed surreal, Chibuzor said he thought the armed men were unknown gunmen. Shots were fired as he was forcibly removed from his vehicle and placed into theirs.
During the abduction, Chibuzor was blindfolded and transported to an undisclosed location. He was later moved to a bush area, where he remained in captivity alongside another hostage for four days. Throughout his detention, his captors did not physically harm him and provided necessities, including food and medication.
On the fourth day, the kidnappers informed him that his family had paid the ransom and he would be freed. Chibuzor said he began crying upon his release, overwhelmed by the realization that he had survived.
Speaking with journalists recently, the actor described the psychological aftermath of the experience. He continues to struggle with anxiety and fear, particularly while driving. The trauma has also influenced his professional decisions, making him reluctant to accept filming assignments in unfamiliar areas.
Chibuzor’s account sheds light on the security challenges facing entertainers working in certain regions and the enduring mental health consequences of such traumatic events.
