A northern political group, the Northern Patriotic Forum, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to offer automatic tickets to all its current National Assembly lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group made the call during a press briefing in Abuja, led by its Convener, Abacha Ali, and Chairman, Abdulmumnini Tijani.
According to the Forum, retaining sitting lawmakers without internal contest would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, improve legislative output, and bring consistency to governance. They said lawmakers who serve longer gain deeper knowledge, mentor new members, and better represent their constituencies.
Abacha Ali explained that countries like the United States have lawmakers who spend decades in office, using their experience to guide debates and shape stronger laws. He said the same model should apply in Nigeria, allowing lawmakers to grow in their roles and finish long-term legislative projects.
The Forum believes the APC would benefit from the move. They stated it would reduce internal conflicts during primaries, increase stability in the party, and boost public confidence in governance.
They also appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, and Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to support the idea and push for its adoption before the 2027 primaries.
Abacha Ali and Abdulmumnini Tijani urged all APC members to support what they described as a forward-thinking plan that would not only benefit individual lawmakers but also strengthen Nigeria’s democracy in the long run.
