Olawepo-Hashim Demands Action as Violence Spreads Across Nigerian States

Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim denounces the killings in Plateau, Benue and Ondo, calling for immediate security reform.

Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has expressed deep concern over the rising violence in Plateau, Benue and Ondo States, describing the situation as a painful reflection of Nigeria’s collapsing security structure. The former presidential candidate questioned the Federal Government’s ability to manage the escalating crisis and demanded swift and far-reaching changes to the country’s security system.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Dr. Hashim voiced frustration over the repeated loss of innocent lives, asking pointedly when the bloodshed will end and when real solutions will be put in place. He criticized the government for clinging to a centralized approach to security, which he believes is no longer effective or responsive enough to handle the complex threats the country faces.

According to him, the existing security system has become overstretched and unable to respond quickly, especially at the local level where attacks are most frequent. He also pointed to Nigeria’s weak border control and limited cooperation with neighboring countries as major contributors to the crisis, allowing armed groups and bandits to move freely and carry out attacks with little resistance.

Dr. Hashim highlighted the shifting pattern of violence, explaining that as federal forces increase their presence in one region, attackers simply relocate to another area with weaker security coverage. What began in the North East has moved to the North West and is now hitting the North Central region hard.

He described the situation as a form of evolving insurgency, stressing the urgent need for a new security strategy that involves state and local governments and places a greater emphasis on intelligence gathering and community-level response. In his words, peace is overdue and there is no more time to waste.

Dr. Hashim also warned against simplifying the violence as random communal clashes. He said the attacks appear to be well-planned and executed by groups involved in guerrilla warfare, deliberately targeting rural and semi-urban communities in Northern Nigeria. He referred to these attackers as an organized mix of terror and banditry networks who have turned the region into their battlefield.

Offering his sympathy to the victims, Dr. Hashim extended condolences to the affected families and communities. He prayed for healing and comfort for those who lost loved ones and those who are recovering from injuries.

Meanwhile, police investigations into the killings in Bokkos have resulted in the arrest of two suspects, who are said to be assisting with ongoing inquiries.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim, known for his role in national politics and business, was a presidential candidate in the 2019 elections and continues to engage actively in national discussions.
