Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has been honoured with the traditional title “Ugosimba 1 of Enugu” during a two-day official visit to Enugu State. The title, meaning Jewel or Eagle from another kingdom, was conferred by the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council in recognition of her contributions to national service and her support for humanitarian causes.
The Chairman of the Council, HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, praised her long-standing public service, especially her three-term tenure in the Senate and her recent national honour as a Commander of the Order of the Niger. He also highlighted her continued support for healthcare workers, particularly midwives and nurses, and her efforts to uplift the less privileged.
Igwe Asadu expressed personal appreciation, stating that as a fellow nurse, he found her compassion towards the sick, the hungry, and the vulnerable deeply commendable. He emphasized that the council’s gesture was to publicly acknowledge and encourage her good works, noting that such efforts can only be truly rewarded by God.
Mrs Tinubu, visibly moved by the ceremony, expressed gratitude to the government, royal fathers, and residents of Enugu for their warm hospitality. She described Enugu as a calm and peaceful place, saying she had felt an inner sense of peace since her arrival.
She regarded the chieftaincy title as a great personal honour and extended the appreciation to her husband, President Bola Tinubu, and their children. Although not her first traditional title, she described this one as unique and spiritually significant. According to her, the recognition would always hold a special place in her heart, and she prayed for continued goodness and development in Enugu State.
Mrs Tinubu ended by assuring the people that this was only the beginning of more positive engagement, expressing confidence in a hopeful future.
