Ondo Assembly Changes Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader to Maintain Political Balance

Ondo Assembly reshuffles top posts to maintain political balance as Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader resign, paving way for new leadership.

The Ondo State House of Assembly has seen the resignation of its Deputy Speaker, Abayomi Akinruntan, and Majority Leader, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, following moves to maintain a fair political balance across the state. Sources confirm that the shifts were made to respect unwritten political arrangements between different local areas within Ondo State.

Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, officially stepped down to align with the customary power-sharing formula in the state. His resignation letter emphasized this reason, stating the need to follow conventional arrangements for elective positions. Ogunmolasuyi, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, also stepped down but did not provide a reason.

While Akinruntan was absent during the Assembly session when his resignation was read by Clerk Benjamin Jayeiola, Ogunmolasuyi was present. Following this, Ololade Gbegude, also from Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated and approved as the new Deputy Speaker.

Speaker Olamide Oladiji praised both outgoing officers for their cooperation and contributions, highlighting their roles as stabilizing forces in the House. The leadership change also reflects the balance between local council areas—Akinruntan and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa come from Ilaje, while Ogunmolasuyi shares a local origin with Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami from Owo.

The smooth transition signals a focus on maintaining harmony within Ondo State’s political landscape.
