The Niger state government has reported that more than 700 people remain missing after severe flooding struck Mokwa Community in Mokwa Local Government Area. Governor Umaru Bago shared this update during a condolence visit in Minna on Tuesday from Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to General Sani Abacha, and his associates. Represented by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, Bago revealed that 207 deaths have been confirmed, and over 3,000 households have lost their homes. The floods caused widespread destruction, damaging 400 houses, 283 homes, and 50 shops.
The governor described the event as a national disaster and thanked individuals and organizations for their donations. He added that the state is collaborating with experts to identify the cause of the flood and is awaiting assessment results. Al-Mustapha, leading a delegation of prominent figures across Nigeria, visited to express sympathy and support. He highlighted the significant losses and their impact on the state, noting plans to meet with Mokwa’s traditional council to discuss prevention measures, improved town planning, and better living conditions.
The delegation also visited former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida (Retired) earlier, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. The Niger government continues to address the crisis and seek solutions to prevent future flooding.
