Paul Simon’s daughter, Lulu Simon, has publicly criticized actor Richard Gere after learning her childhood home is being torn down for a new real estate development. On Tuesday, Lulu shared her frustration in an Instagram story, saying she still “hates” Gere for what she described as a broken promise.
According to her post, Gere bought the New Canaan, Connecticut, property from her parents—Paul Simon and Edie Brickell—in 2022 for $10.8 million. Lulu claims Gere agreed to preserve the land but never moved in. Instead, she says, he sold the estate as nine separate plots to developers who are now demolishing the home.
She expressed her anger with a screenshot of an article about Gere’s involvement in the sale, writing, “Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere – I do!” She added, “I hope my dead pets buried in that backyard haunt you until you descend into a slow and unrelenting madness.”
The sale reportedly closed in October 2024 for $10.75 million. By May 2025, reports surfaced that the property would be demolished to make way for a nine-lot housing project.
Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, moved to Spain at the end of 2024. Alejandra, a native of Spain, wanted to be closer to family. Gere described the relocation as a new chapter, saying he looked forward to experiencing life outside the U.S. and praised Spain’s lifestyle and culture in an interview with Vanity Fair Spain.
Despite the move, the couple plans to split time between Spain and the U.S. Alejandra shared during a 2025 event in New York that they would return for summers and family activities like their children’s camps.
Both Lulu Simon and Richard Gere’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment on the situation.
