The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians to look beyond the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and turn their attention to the worsening hunger and economic hardship affecting millions across the country.
Atiku officially parted ways with the PDP on Wednesday, blaming irreconcilable differences and accusing the party of straying from its founding principles. In a letter sent to the chairman of his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, he expressed disappointment in the party’s direction and called the decision “heartbreaking,” despite his history of serving as Vice President and twice running for president under its platform.
Reacting to the news, a senior member of the PDP’s National Working Committee described the development as neither shocking nor new. Speaking in Abuja, the official told Vanguard that Atiku had previously left the PDP, implying this latest move was simply a repeat.
“Hasn’t he left before? Did the party collapse then?” the official asked, questioning why so much attention was being given to political defections instead of the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. “People are hungry. Are we supposed to define our lives by who joins or leaves a party?”
Atiku’s resignation has stirred speculation about a new political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections, with reports suggesting he may team up with former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and others under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite repeated attempts, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, did not respond to requests for comment.
