Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the former Governor of Abia State, has reassured members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that despite ongoing internal disputes and doubts about the party’s future, the influence of the PDP remains formidable compared to other political parties in Nigeria. Speaking at a South East PDP stakeholders’ meeting, Ikpeazu emphasised the critical need for unity among party leaders in the region. He called on all factions within the PDP to set aside differences and allow the reconciliation committee, headed by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, to complete its work.
Ikpeazu stated that, even in the party’s perceived weakest state, the PDP’s legacy and influence are still more substantial than most Nigerian political parties. He urged party members to maintain unity, respect authority, and work together towards peace.
He also addressed internal conflicts in the South East, urging members to support Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s National Secretary, until the end of his tenure in December. Ikpeazu questioned the actions of some party leaders who have ignored a Supreme Court ruling affirming Anyanwu’s position, warning that this could destabilise the PDP, preparing for the 2027 elections. He stressed the importance of focusing on party unity and collective effort to ensure success in the upcoming elections.
