Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised alarm over the escalating security crisis in Borno State, particularly in the Marte area. Obi described the situation as deeply troubling and urged the Federal Government to send reinforcements to support the efforts of local troops. He praised the leadership of Borno Governor Babagana Zulum for his bravery in staying in the region and directly engaging with affected communities.
Obi voiced his concerns on social media, noting that the security issues in Borno are not just a local problem but a national emergency. He emphasized that the governor’s decision to remain in a dangerous area highlights the kind of leadership Nigeria needs—active, responsive, and committed to the well-being of its people. Obi challenged the federal government to match this courage with concrete actions to secure the region.
He also expressed distress over the displacement of over 20,000 people and the risk of more than 300 communities falling into the hands of insurgents. Governor Zulum has warned that militants are regrouping around Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, and the situation in Marte is critical. Obi stressed that delayed responses and distant leadership would only worsen the crisis.
The former governor of Anambra State urged the federal government to prioritize the safety of displaced citizens and act swiftly to prevent further loss. He concluded that Nigeria’s future depends on a united response to its citizens’ challenges, especially in conflict zones like Borno.
