Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that Nigeria’s rising debt is unproductive, saying the country must rethink how it borrows and spends. Speaking to journalists at a prayer event held in memory of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Obi recalled a personal encounter with the late leader during a campaign period.
Obi described Buhari as a man who genuinely cared for the poor, noting that the former president had once urged him to “please care for poor Nigerians.” According to Obi, those words left a lasting impression on him. “I believe he did his best within his ability,” Obi added, praising Buhari for his simplicity and dedication to the less privileged.
He emphasized that Nigerian leaders must embrace selfless service and remember that life is fleeting. “We must learn to serve our country, knowing that one day, we will all return to our creator,” Obi said.
Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital following a short illness. His body was received by President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries at the Katsina International Airport on Tuesday before being taken to Daura for burial. Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects as the former president was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
