Peter Obi Stays With Labour Party for Now, Says ADC Spokesman

Peter Obi remains in Labour Party to wrap up election matters despite deep involvement in ADC coalition, says spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has not officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a member, even though he has been actively involved in the opposition coalition under the ADC. This was confirmed by the coalition’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, during an interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television.

According to Abdullahi, Obi had requested to stay within the Labour Party for the time being in order to finish ongoing political processes involving his key supporters. Abdullahi noted that Obi has participated in nearly all coalition meetings since its formation, showing his commitment to the alliance.

He clarified that the decision to allow Obi to remain temporarily in Labour Party was approved by the coalition’s leadership. A similar arrangement, he said, was extended to former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, who also needed time to conclude election matters in his original party before formally moving into the ADC.

Meanwhile, discussions about Obi’s political future have intensified. Former Borno State governor Ali Modu Sheriff recently suggested that Obi might return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he was the 2019 vice-presidential candidate. Sheriff believes Obi’s goal of becoming president could be better achieved under the PDP, especially if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar decides to run again in 2027. He claimed that credible information indicates Obi may rejoin the PDP soon to pursue his presidential ambition from that platform.
