The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed that 53 people have been arrested in connection with the recent violent attacks in Benue and Plateau states. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Egbetokun described the June 13 assault on Yelewata community in Benue as a carefully planned act of terror.
He revealed that 22 suspects were arrested for their roles in the Yelewata incident, which left 47 people dead and 27 injured. Another 22 individuals were linked to the killings in Plateau State, while five more were arrested in Benue over a separate recent attack.
Police recovered two general-purpose machine guns and eight AK-47 rifles believed to have been used during the violence. The attacks displaced several residents, increasing the region’s growing security concerns.
