Authorities in Anambra State have apprehended a 46-year-old man believed to be the principal suspect in the brutal killing and beheading of a 69-year-old woman in July 2024.
The suspect, identified as Obadigbo Emmanuel Anumudu, was arrested in Aguleri, located in Anambra East Local Government Area, following intelligence-led operations by the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu.
State Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest in an official statement. He explained that Anumudu had been evading capture since the incident occurred on July 22, 2024, when the victim, Mrs. Obianuju Akubi, was killed in Umueri.
During questioning, Anumudu admitted to committing the crime. He provided information that helped investigators identify additional suspects involved in the attack. The suspect also revealed the location of the victim’s severed head, which had been removed from the crime scene.
Ikenga stated that police operations are continuing to locate and arrest other members of the group allegedly responsible for the murder. He added that the command would release further information as the investigation progresses.
The arrest comes after more than a year of investigation into the killing, which shocked residents of the community. Authorities are working to ensure all individuals connected to the crime are brought before the courts.
