The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, strongly criticized a recent attack in Yelwata, Benue State, where over 200 people were killed, calling it a senseless act of terror that threatens Nigeria’s unity and security. During a visit to the affected community for a firsthand assessment, Egbetokun promised to strengthen cooperation with other security agencies to restore lasting peace in Benue. He stated that the criminals responsible for the violence would soon face justice, emphasizing that their days of operating freely are numbered.
Speaking to the people of Benue, he expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Nigerian Police Force to the state government, residents, and families affected by the tragedy. Egbetokun also shared that President Bola Tinubu is deeply troubled by the attack on vulnerable communities and is committed to stopping the wave of crime and terror across the state and nation.
He assured residents that the police, in collaboration with other agencies, would deploy sufficient personnel and resources to protect lives and property, particularly in border communities facing ongoing security challenges.
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, praised President Tinubu and Egbetokun for their swift response to the crisis. Alia described the state as mourning and sleepless due to the violence, but expressed hope that the Inspector General’s visit would boost confidence and bring reassurance of peace. He noted that while efforts had previously reduced attacks in 17 local government areas to six, the past two months saw a rise in violence.
Alia expressed confidence that with the President’s directives and the Inspector General’s commitment, the state would overcome the crisis, and the tragic events would soon be history.
