Police Crack Down on Illegal Firearms in Enugu

Enugu police arrest 7 suspects, including a firearm repairer, in a week-long operation, seizing illegal weapons and ammunition.

Enugu State Police arrested seven suspects, including a 39-year-old alleged firearm repairer, during a week-long operation from June 15 to June 21. The arrests followed intelligence-led raids aimed at curbing crime, as announced by police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe. The operations, directed by Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa, resulted in the recovery of seven illegal firearms, one expended cartridge, two live cartridges, and other evidence. On June 21, the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad apprehended a 25-year-old suspect at 9th Mile, recovering a cut-down double-barrelled gun and an expended cartridge. This arrest came after three other suspects, who confessed to being part of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, admitted to using the weapon in crimes. On June 17, another 22-year-old suspect was arrested after the firearm repairer, previously detained for armed robbery and cultism, led police to him. The repairer, who admitted to being a Black Axe Confraternity member, confessed to fixing weapons used in criminal acts. Police recovered a locally-made Beretta-style pistol, two double-barrelled pistols, a single-barrel pistol, a double-barrel gun chamber, and repair tools. Between June 15 and 20, SWAT and Octopus Tactical Squads raided crime hotspots in Nkanu West and Enugu North, arresting another 39-year-old suspect with a locally-made Beretta-like pistol. Fleeing suspects abandoned a cut-down gun and two live cartridges during these raids. All suspects will face court proceedings once investigations are complete.
