Politicians Reject PDP for Opposition Coalition, Calls it a “Virus”

Babachir Lawal reveals that the opposition coalition is not considering the PDP, calling it "an incurable virus" amid ongoing leadership issues.

Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not be part of the opposition coalition seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. During an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, Lawal explained that the coalition’s technical committee is exploring options, including forming a new party or revamping an existing one.

He further emphasized that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is actively involved in the coalition’s efforts to unseat President Bola Tinubu. Lawal stated that many politicians backing the alliance have agreed on the need for a united front against the APC. However, when asked why the PDP was excluded from the discussions, Lawal described the party as suffering from “an incurable virus,” suggesting that its issues are beyond repair and cannot be resolved.

According to Lawal, there has been no interest in adopting the PDP as the coalition’s platform due to internal problems. He revealed that a new political platform would soon be announced to calm Nigerians’ concerns regarding the opposition’s future direction. His comments hint that Atiku may be preparing to leave the PDP, given its ongoing leadership crisis. The party’s divisions have deepened since losing in the 2023 presidential election, with disagreements continuing over key leadership positions.
