Presidency Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Rejects Afenifere’s Criticism

Presidency rebuts Afenifere’s claims of failure, insisting Tinubu’s reforms are tough but vital for Nigeria’s economic recovery.

The Presidency has responded to criticism from the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, rejecting claims that President Bola Tinubu’s government has failed Nigerians. Afenifere had alleged a decline in human development, economic mismanagement, and weakening democratic values under the current administration. But the President’s media adviser, Sunday Dare, described their view as biased and politically motivated, noting that the group supported an opposition candidate in the 2023 elections.

According to Dare, Tinubu’s economic policies, though tough, are part of a larger effort to restore stability. He explained that the removal of fuel subsidy, introduced on May 29, 2023, helped Nigeria save over $10 billion in the same year. This, he said, eased pressure on government finances and allowed more resources to be directed toward other sectors. The decision to unify the exchange rate and allow the naira to float was also aimed at correcting long-standing distortions in the currency market. These measures, he noted, contributed to foreign reserves growing to $38.1 billion and a trade surplus of N18.86 trillion by 2024.

Dare criticised Afenifere’s position as lacking a factual basis and said their remarks ignore positive developments. He questioned what alternative solutions opposition voices have offered, and stressed that many of the administration’s achievements are already having a real impact. On the issue of governance cost, Dare stated that while the Oronsaye Report has not been fully implemented, the government is working on improving financial discipline.

He also dismissed allegations of favoritism in the distribution of palliatives and the allocation of major projects. Although he acknowledged public concerns over the management of relief efforts, he insisted that claims of corruption lacked proof. On accusations that the administration is undermining democracy and promoting one-party rule, Dare called the statements unfounded and warned against spreading fear without evidence. He said there’s no credible basis for claims that the government is interfering in the affairs of opposition parties.

The Presidency’s response aims to counter Afenifere’s critique and reinforce the position that the reforms, although difficult, are necessary steps toward rebuilding Nigeria’s economy.
