The Presidency has postponed the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session initially planned for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The decision was announced by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the session was shelved due to the state burial scheduled for the same day in Buhari’s hometown, Daura, Katsina State. A new date for the meeting will be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the funeral.
The Federal Government has also declared Tuesday a public holiday across the country to allow Nigerians to pay their last respects to the former leader. Buhari’s body is expected to arrive from London by noon and will be buried the same day according to Islamic traditions.
President Buhari passed away on Sunday at a London hospital after battling a long illness. President Tinubu had initially convened the emergency FEC session as part of a series of national tributes. He also announced a seven-day period of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila are in London to escort Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.
