President Bola Tinubu met with suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, at the State House in Abuja on Thursday night, June 26. The meeting, aimed at ending the months-long political tension in the state, also included suspended members of the State House of Assembly who have now reconciled with the governor.
After the closed-door session, Wike told reporters that the crisis had been settled. According to him, all parties involved agreed to work together again under a united political front. He emphasised that the disagreements were over and thanked President Tinubu for facilitating the peace talks. “We thank God that peace has finally returned. We’ve all agreed to support the governor, and he has agreed to work with us. This marks the end of all disputes,” Wike said.
Governor Fubara echoed the same message, saying the return of peace was crucial for the progress of Rivers State. He credited President Tinubu and the state’s political leaders for helping to restore calm. “What Rivers needs is peace, and I’m happy that today, by God’s grace and the President’s support, that peace has returned,” Fubara stated.
The reconciliation comes months after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18, 2025, following a prolonged standoff between Fubara and Wike over unresolved political issues.
