President Tinubu to Address National Assembly on June 12, Honors Lawmakers

President Tinubu will address the National Assembly on June 12, celebrating Democracy Day and honoring lawmakers for their service to Nigeria’s democracy.

President Bola Tinubu will speak to a joint session of Nigeria’s National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, to mark Democracy Day. The event recognizes the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s most credible poll. The election was won by the late Moshood Abiola but was annulled by the then-military government led by General Ibrahim Babangida.

According to a statement from the House of Representatives spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, lawmakers were notified of the event through an internal memo from Yahaya Danzaria, clerk of the House. During the session, President Tinubu will confer national honours on selected legislators. The special sitting will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber in the National Assembly Complex, beginning at 11:00 AM. The president is scheduled to arrive by noon to deliver his address.

This year’s Democracy Day theme is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” The program will include goodwill messages from former National Assembly leaders and highlight the National Assembly’s role in upholding democracy, promoting accountability, and driving national progress over Nigeria’s 26 years of civilian rule.

The event marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history and celebrates the continued strength of its democratic institutions.
