The Police Service Commission (PSC) has distanced itself from a recent announcement inviting applications for the 12th Regular Course Degree Programme at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano. The PSC described the advert as unauthorized, illegal, and a violation of established procedures.
In a statement released on Thursday, PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani declared the publication null and void. He explained that the advert, which stated that online applications would run from July 28 to September 8, 2025, was issued without the approval or knowledge of the Commission, which is the only body legally empowered to recruit officers into the Nigeria Police Force.
Ani emphasized that the action of the Police Academy disregards the law and is a clear attempt to bypass the Commission’s constitutional role. He referenced judgments from the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court that reaffirmed the PSC’s sole authority over police recruitment.
He also criticized the Police Academy for not involving critical agencies such as the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Federal Character Commission, and the PSC itself before issuing the notice. The imposition of a ₦6,000 application fee was also condemned as unjustifiable and likely to promote corruption in what should be a free recruitment process.
The PSC expressed concern over the demand that all applicants travel to Kano for the screening exercise, noting that this approach is wasteful, stressful, and exposes applicants to avoidable risks. The Commission described the entire exercise as disorganized and contrary to the principles of equity, accountability, and transparency outlined in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The PSC made it clear that it would not bear any responsibility for consequences arising from what it described as an illegitimate exercise. It urged the public to ignore the advertisement entirely.
