The House of Representatives Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity has called on nurses and midwives across Nigeria to end their ongoing nationwide strike. The Committee said the strike is worsening the already fragile state of healthcare delivery in the country.
Committee Chairman Asiwaju Adegboyega Adefarati released a statement acknowledging the vital role of nurses and midwives in protecting the health of Nigerians. He urged the union to act in the national interest, especially during what he described as a critical time in Nigeria’s economic recovery.
Adefarati expressed concern that the strike is disrupting medical services nationwide and further weakening the health sector. While recognizing the legitimacy of the workers’ complaints, he appealed for the suspension of the strike to allow for continued negotiations.
The Committee noted that both the Minister of Labour and the Minister of Health are currently in talks with the leadership of the nurses and midwives’ union, working toward a peaceful resolution.
The lawmakers urged the health workers to embrace dialogue and show patriotism by returning to work. They expressed hope that ongoing discussions would lead to a fair resolution that addresses workers’ concerns without compromising the healthcare rights of Nigerians.
