Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Retired), who currently serves as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has been summoned by the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight for a critical interactive session scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2025. The session is set to take place at 4:00 PM in Room 414 of the House of Representatives New Building, located within the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
This invitation was confirmed in an official statement released by Rep. Akin Rotimi, the House Spokesperson, following the committee’s first meeting held on Wednesday. The meeting was convened just one day after the committee’s formal inauguration, which was presided over by the Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen on April 15, 2025.
The primary purpose of the upcoming engagement is to thoroughly review the situation in Rivers State and examine developments since Vice Admiral Ibas assumed his role. The committee intends to use the session to gain firsthand insight into administrative actions and emerging issues affecting the state.
According to the statement, the invitation aligns with the committee’s legislative responsibility under Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. The committee sees this step as essential for fulfilling its oversight role effectively and ensuring the National Assembly remains well-informed about the governance of the state.
Hon. Julius Ihonvbere (OON), Chairman of the Committee and House Leader, stated that this engagement is designed to uphold accountability and transparency. He stressed that understanding the current realities in Rivers State is vital for guiding legislative decisions in the best interest of the Nigerian people.
The committee confirmed that a formal invitation was sent to Vice Admiral Ibas and that acknowledgment of the invitation has been received. The decision to make the session public, according to Rotimi, reflects the committee’s dedication to transparency and open governance.
The Ad-Hoc Committee also reiterated its commitment to carrying out its responsibilities with integrity, diligence, and strict adherence to the constitution, signaling a strong resolve to keep the public informed while promoting responsible leadership at all levels.
