Three suspected Fulani cattle rustlers were arrested on Monday by security agents in the Ohiya community, Umuahia South LGA of Abia State. The arrests were made by Operation Crush, a special anti-crime unit set up by the Abia State government. Acting on a tip-off, the operatives moved quickly to intercept the suspects and prevent what could have turned into a violent conflict between Fulani herders and the host community.
Speaking at a press briefing in Umuahia, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Security, retired Navy Commander Macdonald Uba, praised the swift response of the security team. He said their timely intervention averted a major crisis. According to him, the rustlers had planned to steal cattle from fellow Fulani herdsmen and then blame the Ohiya community, potentially sparking tensions.
Uba assured that Abia State would not allow criminals to disturb the peace, adding that the government has gathered useful intelligence to arrest those planning to buy the stolen cattle.
Traditional ruler of the Hausa community in Abia, HRH Eze Yaro Danladi, also condemned the attempted theft. He said it could have triggered serious unrest if the situation wasn’t contained.
During questioning, one of the suspects claimed they only targeted a single cow, though the owners reported five missing. All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Authorities say prosecution will follow once the investigation is complete.
