The Senate will resume its plenary on May 6, 2025, with a strong focus on addressing the ongoing socio-political issues in Rivers State and other parts of the country. As part of the agenda, the Senate plans to collaborate with the executive arm of government to ensure reconciliation among key stakeholders, aiming to resolve conflicts and address their underlying causes. The goal is to foster national unity and public interest.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader, highlighted that a critical item on the agenda is the further consideration of the Tax Reform Bills for 2024. This legislation is essential for updating the country’s tax system, increasing federal revenue, and enabling effective project implementation by all levels of government.
In addition to this, the Senate will focus on resolving the increasing insecurity in states like Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau. The Senate is committed to working with the security sector to develop strategies that will strengthen national security and eliminate terrorism across the federation.
During the Senate’s recess, the Presidency made several key appointments, including the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari. These appointments will also be subjected to Senate approval.
The Senate has been progressing with the review of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which will continue under the leadership of the Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jubrin. The review aims to enhance Nigeria’s federal structure and ensure it meets the needs of the citizens.
Another significant agenda for the Senate is the review of the Electoral Act of 2022 to ensure future elections are more transparent and credible. With various important bills pending, the Senate is committed to passing legislation that addresses national interests, particularly in key economic sectors. Additionally, the Senate will encourage public participation by organizing hearings, allowing citizens to contribute to the law-making process.
