Shettima Reaffirms FG’s Commitment to Traditional Rulers at Deji of Akure’s Anniversary

Shettima pledges continued respect and collaboration with traditional rulers at Deji of Akure’s 10th anniversary, stressing their vital role in nation-building.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has restated the Federal Government’s commitment to respecting and supporting traditional institutions across Nigeria. Speaking at a colloquium in Akure to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi’s reign as the Deji of Akureland, Shettima said royal fathers remain central to peacebuilding and cultural preservation.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Economic Affairs, Dr. Tope Fasua, the Vice President emphasized that traditional rulers are key custodians of cultural identity and play critical roles in unifying communities. He stressed that the government would continue to engage with them to tap into their wisdom and experience in governance and conflict resolution.

Shettima praised Oba Aladelusi for his impactful leadership, calling for stronger collaboration between the government and traditional institutions to drive development at all levels.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who delivered a lecture at the event, described traditional institutions as vital components of Nigeria’s identity and governance. He said these institutions, long before modern governance systems, upheld justice, coordinated local security, and fostered unity. According to Makinde, integrating traditional leaders into governance structures has yielded significant results in Oyo State, and should be recognized constitutionally for greater national development.

Makinde argued that true nation-building lies not in natural resources but in the strength of institutions and their ability to serve citizens equitably. He urged the Federal Government to prioritize constitutional recognition for traditional rulers.
