Six people have died and three others are still missing after a Nigerian Navy gunboat capsized near Escravos waters in Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State. The victims include three naval officers, two members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and one civilian. The accident reportedly happened Thursday evening, shortly after 7 p.m., near a Chevron Nigeria Limited facility.
The boat was returning from Okerenkoko, where the Navy had conducted a medical outreach earlier that day. All 15 people on board—nine naval personnel and six civilians—had participated in the event and were heading back to their hotel in the Arunton community when the boat overturned.
According to an official naval report, seven officers and five civilians were rescued and rushed to a Chevron facility for emergency care. However, six were later confirmed dead by the attending Chief Medical Officer. Efforts to find the remaining two naval personnel and one corps member are ongoing.
The incident has raised serious concerns, especially as the trip followed a goodwill mission. The Navy has not yet provided details on what caused the accident.
